19.2.57.
sir,
I am directed by Mr.Secretary Ormsby Gore
to refer to the letter from this Department of the
9th October, 1936, enclosing a copy of a despatch from
the Governor of Hong Kong, reporting concerning a visit
paid by him to Canton, and to transmit to you, to he
laid before Mr.Secretary Eden, a copy of a further
despatch from the Governor in which he discusses the
question of the connection of the Canton-Kowloon and the
Hankow-Canton Railways.
2. The Secretary of State agrees with the Governor
that the connection of these two railway lines can only
be left to take its own course, and subject to any
observations that Mr. Eden may have to make, but
proposes simply to acknowledge the despatch saying that
it has been read with interest.
THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE,
FOREIGN OFFICE.
